20.03.20 - Schools Closed

0.0 x 0.0

On the 2oth March the British government closed all schools – until further notice – indefinitely. I was teaching in a secondary school in North Devon, on the 20th March, the last lesson I taught was a Yr 11 GCSE English lesson – their usual teacher was self isolating as a diabetic. I was their last experience of school. We looked at some war poetry on You Tube – unsure whether their GCSE exams were cancelled. It was more than odd, bleak, a time I will always remember – be slightly haunted by. One of the 16 yr old boys climbed out the window – a ground floor classroom in a quad – he had always wanted to, the class signed each others shirts with sharpie pens. Schools are due to reopen fully in September 2020 – if the numbers of corona virus stay low. Education moved from school – except for the children of key workers and the ‘vulnerable’ – to home, online learning and parcels sent home. The effect will be felt for a long time.
