About The Artist

My artworks start with a landscape or detail I find compelling, which I capture as a digital photograph. The subjects are mostly landscapes or natural objects in Washington County, NY, where I live. To create repeat patterns, I copy, flip and rotate a selected area of a photograph so that the pieces fit together seamlessly to simulate a complete and mysteriously ordered universe. A limited number of coherent, non-disjointed "wallpaper" patterns can be made. These images are facile manipulations, but each contains a unique pattern arising from the alignment of components of the original photograph. The patterns, often beautiful and intricate, are perceived as abstract, while the details are seen as photographic. The result is ambiguous, an elaboration of the natural world that exists simultaneously in two contradictory states.
