About The Artist

Art is part of my being My being is part of my art My name is Rita Surgey but I usually use my pen name Macanuda. According to my online dictionary Macanudo/a is: “English: mega - smashing - tiptop - whizzbang - excellent”, not because I think I am but because that is what I aspire to with my art. I was born and brought up in Montevideo, Uruguay and went to school in Argentina. Lucky enough to have a great art teacher at school I excelled at art. My ambition was to go to art school. Fortunately, my father said I ´wouldn’t earn enough to buy toothpaste´. Although toothpaste was not my ambition, I thank my father for not allowing me to ´study´ art. It works best if you just do it – with or without toothpaste. I have never lacked toothpaste and now I have the confidence to believe my art is worth much more than I will ever need. My pictures are abstract studies of what I see and feel. I use acrylics, pen and ink, mixed media, photography, murals, more exploration and adventure to come. The feel, shape, colours and movement of the sea, sky, trees, flowers, small details of life, all beg me to paint or draw them when I allow myself to see them and be drawn into their nature. I hope my art touches your being. 2023 sees me turning to watercolour and smaller formats. Onwards and Upwards Contact me macanuda.art@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/MacanudaArtist/
