Young Stars Exciting their Parent Cloud

A high-magnification image of the Orchid "Phalaenopsis', taken looking into the light. The title derives from a frequent occurrence in Star-Formation. A cloud of hydrogen collapses partially, and produces a cluster of young stars. (This is on the left). Some of these stars are likely to be very hot, emitting X-rays. The remainder of the hydrogen cloud in on the right, and is being irradiated by the X-rays coming from the stars. Hydrogen, when irradiated with X-rays produces a pink-purple glow.
