Tending My Grandmother's Garden by Emily Hanako Momohara

0.0 x 0.0

My Grandmother was born in the USA to Japanese immigrant parents. Her life contained a combination and collaboration of traditions from both cultures. Growing up, her home was my playground frequently and I emulated her constantly. In a way, her example shaped my view the world and art-making. Today, my work visually investigates our multi-cultural life. In "Tending My Grandmother's Garden", I drew on bonsai, a Japanese gardening art-form, which my Grandmother practiced. This series of work symbolically manipulates, cares for and protects the bonsai through Japanese and American techniques. The still lives are representative the preciousness I hold for my mixed culture.
