About The Artist

Mónica Álvarez de Sotomayor, born in Cordoba (Spain), early developed a deep love towards art. The artistic legacy passed down by her ancestor – the eminent Spanish artist as well as director of El Museo del Prado de Madrid, Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor (1875-1960) – traced her current trajectory as a fine artist. After getting her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Humanities in Cordoba, she specialized in different painting techniques in Marbella, and finally settled in New York, where she has currently established her studio, while continuing to increase her artistic knowledge towards a more international bias at the recognized schools The Cooper Union and The New York Art Students League. Her work is characterized by an intense use of color and the representation of the female figure. The presence of nature is also a key component in her paintings as witnessed in her various group and solo exhibitions. Some of the artists that she admires – among many others – are Joaquín Sorolla, Caravaggio, Jacques-Louis David, Salvador Dalí, William Merritt Chase, Edward Hopper, John Singer Sargent and contemporary artist, Nelson Shanks.
