The Strings of the Heart The modern major orchestra is comprised of many instruments with the majority violins. The reason for this can be summed up in three words… matter of intonation. Since producing a pitch on a violin is accomplished by putting a finger down onto a vibrating string, slight inaccuracies in finger placement result in slight inaccuracies in pitch.. It is much more difficult for two violinists to be perceived as playing in tune with each other as it is for twenty-two, assuming a critical minimum level of competence.
