Adriaan van Heerden

About The Artist

Adriaan van Heerden is an award-winning international photographer, passionate about wildlife, travel and landscapes. In his work he attempts to convey something of the thrill of encountering nature in all its wild beauty or experiencing a foreign culture first-hand. He finds nothing more exciting than getting up at the crack of dawn for an early morning game drive in an African nature reserve, soaking up the atmosphere of a misty canal in Venice, or being in the right place when the sun rises over the Santa Fe Mountains in New Mexico. Depending on the image he uses colour or monochrome processing to emphasise the poetic quality of the picture, always aware that it is the privilege of the artist to create beauty in a fragile world, and that photography has a role to play in preserving and conserving that beauty. Adriaan’s work has been exhibited in London (Cork Street, Pall Mall, Chelsea and Bloomsbury), Surrey and Cheshire, and his pictures are held in private collections in the UK, the USA and South Africa. He has written on wildlife photography for Go! Magazine (South Africa) and Nature Watching in Europe. His pictures have been published in the BBC Wildlife Magazine, Outdoor Photography, eXel Photo Magazine, Surrey Life Magazine, Go! Magazine (South Africa) and Art Has No Borders. In 2014 he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition; Runner-Up Winner in the Art Has No Borders International Art Competition on the Animal Kingdom; Highly Commended in the USA Landscape Photographer of the Year Competition; shortlisted for the East West Art Awards 2014; and he also received awards in several other competitions (full details are on his website). He was selected to be one of four Artists in Residence at the Jarfo Gallery in Kyoto in April 2015. He runs regular photography workshops and weekends in the UK and wildlife photography safaris to East and Southern Africa. For more information please visit www.adriaanvanheerden.com.
