Born in Tokyo in 1941, Chizu Suzuki is an oil painter. Kumiko, the practice of comparing incense fragrances, is part of the traditional Japanese cultural art of fragrance appreciation called kodo which has been passed down since the Heian period (794-1185 CE). In her pieces, Suzuki invariably depicts fragrances, aiming for an art?form which combines kodo (the sense of smell) with painting (the sense of sight). In addition, Suzuki is a teacher of the Shino School of kodo and has also displayed talent in the field of poetry.
