ARTIST'S STATEMENT. PAINTINGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A JOY TO ME - BOTH LOOKING AT THEM AND PAINTING THEM. I WAS TAUGHT TO PAINT BY A DUTCH ART MASTER, ALEX ROTTEVEEL WHO HAD RE-LOCATED TO THE SMALL COUNTRY TOWN OF MARYBOROUGH, QUEENSLAND. HE INSTILLED IN ME AN ABIDING LOVE FOR THE WORKS OF THE FRENCH IMPRESSIONISTS AND, IN FACT, A NUMBER OF OTHER INDIVIDUALS. SOME THAT SPRING TO MIND ARE VINCENT VAN GOGH AND FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT SALVATOR DALI AND MARC CHAGALL- AND KANDINSKY AND SO MANY OTHERS......INCLUDING THE AUSTRALIAN HEIDELBERG SCHOOL IMPRESSIONISM IS CHARACTERIZED BY A FOCUS ON THE IMMEDIATE VISUAL IMPRESSION PRODUCED BY A SCENE . THEY USED MORE BRILLIANT COLOUR, A WIDER TONAL RANGE AND BROKEN BRUSHWORK TO REPRESENT MORE FAITHFULLY THE PLAY OF NATURAL LIGHT ON AN OBJECT. THE IMPRESSIONISTS AND THEIR SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES IN USING LIGHT AND COLOUR REMAIN A VITAL INTEREST AND A CHALLENGE FOR ME TO THIS DAY. I HOPE THAT THOSE VISUAL CONCEPTS OF LIGHT AND IMMEDIACY ARE IN EVIDENCE IN MY CURRENT RANGE OF WORKS . Di McConville 5 April, 2012
