Chantal Meza

Sobre el Artista

A self-taught artist. Born in Tecali de Herrera, México. Chantal's home environment placed her amongst many local artisans and crafts-persons, whose unique regional skills date back to the pre-Hispanic period. Chantal methods have incorporated these skills, from subconscious memories and direct family participation, learning to apply them in novel and captivating ways. A synergy of styles result in original and sensational forms of expressions. Chantal's work represents both a marriage and crossover between the old artisan techniques, which include the direct use of hands, and materials such as Onyx, and her contemporary ideas about the need for an abstract engagement with the world. A visual memory of experience allows her to connect the real with the abstract in ways that have become a fundamental part of her work. Chantal continues to focus in her work on the all too human and vulnerable dimensions to life; especially the human psyche and the life of the mind as seen through the prism of colour and the ways it creates an image of thought and feeling. Through her art, she scrutinises the painful depths of human desire, expressing the lived experiences many feel but struggle to put into words. Her works as such are profoundly intimate; yet speak to wider social issues. In this regard, Chantal offers an emotional confrontation, tapping into the complexity of the human condition, she sees herself here as the object of experimentation by which all sensations are transformed. As someone who believes in the art of life, Chantal co-creates in this world with her soulmate and partner Brad Evans, who inspires her to live as a constant explosion of shapes. She continues to admire the brilliance and courage of the man, who has showed her in the most subtle ways the strongest of all human sensations: that which we name "love".
