CIRELLA JONES

About The Artist

Artist’s Biography Cirella Jones was born and raised on the island of Trinidad, of the twin island republic Trinidad and Tobago. She migrated to New York in 1997 to live permanently in Brooklyn. Growing up her love to color and draw was her means to express her creativity. Coming from a culture as that of Trinidad and Tobago; full of vibrance, color and the undeniable natural Caribbean beat that describes “de carnival an de bacchanal”, her inspiration and work reflect those characteristics. In school back in Trinidad, she took a liking to textile design. Even though the techniques involved seemed traditional, they allowed a freedom of expression that was authentic and a means to embellish. It was Cirella’s opportunity to stray away from details and allow color and form to simply flow. While attending LIU Brooklyn where she studied Visual Art she was introduced to other media including graphic design and photography but still incorporating textile design. However, painting became her main emphasis. Cirella references the Trinidadian greats like Boscoe Holder, Jackie Hinkson, Leroy Clarke, Pat Bishop and Carlisle Change as her early influences. In 2010, Cirella had her first solo, professional exhibit at the Brooklyn Artists Gym. Her goal was to showcase her talent just to get her feet wet and to hear what people would have to say about her style of work. Cirella currently lives in East New York, Brooklyn. She is a fulltime Executive Assistant at a home care agency. Art is her passion; she has a profound faith that what she creates speaks volumes because there’s always a visual story to be told and with the right platform it will be seen.
