About The Artist
I was born in Bournemouth and even as a little boy, I loved drawing, the seaside, plants and the countryside etc.?
?
My school didn't really encourage art but my family did so I was always drawing and painting.
?
I went straight into work from school and my first job was for a textile retail company and here I learned about Visual Merchandising, surrounded by lengths of fabric, some which dated back to the 70's! I still remember the smell of the new fabric lengths when they were delivered! (but that's another story)
?
My career turned towards Administration and Accounts but I kept my interest in Art & Design by attaining an Art A'level via Adult Education, and got into the local paper as I was 18 and my Grandad was 80 when we both passed! I attended several Life & Still Life Drawing classes and then discovered my love of Ceramics during evening classes with my work being inspired by Greek and Egyptian Art and among other pieces produced a bust of Nefertiti, which although exploding in half in the kiln was lovingly repaired.
?
After too many years in the stressful world of Accounting, I realised that there must be more to life!
?
I looked into studying for a Degree and decided on Textile & Surface Design. After a 1st year of experimenting, I rediscovered my love of Ceramics and was introduced to plaster and concrete as design materials too! I also discovered flock and its ability to contrast with these surfaces.
?
One of our Projects was presented by renowned International Interior Designer Naomi Cleaver, who chose my work as winner out of our Year Group, for its handmade quality, contrast in texture, experimentation and benefits to Visually Impaired people. Thank you Naomi!
?
I love "Touch & Sensation" and want to people to enjoy my work and hopefully smile in the process.
Thank you
Lawrence
