This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread in Europe, Asia and Africa. In South Africa they are often seen perched on roadside telegraph poles. When hunting they fly 5- 20 m above ground, frequently turning into the wind and hovering, before swooping down to catch rats or mice. Blacksholdered Kites are the only other small raptor that regularly hover in this fashion, its wonderful to watch them in action, they have fantastic control and make it look easy.
