Pablo Picasso
Title: The Old Guitarist Artist: Pablo Picasso Department: Modern Art Origin: Spain Date: 1903–1904 Medium: Oil on panel Movement: Picasso's Blue Period, Expressionism Dimensions: 122.9 × 82.6 cm (48 3/8 × 32 1/2 in.) Location: Art Institute of Chicago The Old Guitarist, sometimes referred as the blind guitarist, was a depiction of an elderly man with visible skin and bones. Despite his obvious frailty, the old guy seemed to cling to his guitar, as if seeking redemption for his dire circumstances. Picasso painted Old Guitarist to reflect not only his criticism of society, but also to serve as a metaphor for human existence. Because the Old Guitarist was painted during Picasso's Blue Period, it embodied a tremendous degree of sadness and suffering. The hardships that Picasso was enduring at the time are also reflected in the artwork. The painting depicts a poor man crouched over his guitar, depicting Picasso's low level of living at the time.
