Afrofuturism in Action: The Art of AfriCOBRA

Jae Jarell, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Jeff Donaldson, Akili Ron Anderson

AfriCOBRA stands for African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists, and was founded in Chicago by Jeff Donaldson, Wadsworth Jarrell, Jae Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu. Established in 1968, the group arose amidst inspiration from the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Initially called COBRA, or Coalition of Black Revolutionary Artists, the “Afri” prefix was later added to underline that Black diasporic communities everywhere are descendants of a long legacy of African ancestors who paved the future for their descendants, despite the struggles and oppression they faced. Their main aim was to create artworks that people from all different Afro-diasporic communities could identify with. In doing so, their bold, innovative artworks honored their past and ancestors, while simultaneously envisioning a bright, positive future for Black people everywhere.
