About The Artist
Edelweiss Calcagno is an internationally recognized Italo-American artist known for her multi-media artwork. She has experience in all types of printmaking, in painting and sculpture. She often tears apart her paintings and prints to reattach them creating sculptures of new contemporary shapes unifying all three of those disciplines in one. She has been experimenting with different techniques gearing her attention also to optic illusion, and games involving shadows. Through her artwork she helps people that suffered traumas like sexual, physical and psychological abuse and addresses some of the issues many people have as consequences. Her projects not only involve those who suffered but it also touches a delicate part which is the survival and how to cope with those traumas.
She completed her AA with Honor at Montgomery College, then a BA Honors Cum Laude in Studio Art and a second BA in Art History, University of Maryland. She graduated with an MFA in Studio Art from Towson University where she received 3 GSA Research Scholarship Awards and was a part time adjunct professor in printmaking for 2 years. As a graduate she also worked as assistant to the Director of the MFA Studio Arts. She also was a monitor in the Printmaking department in all 3 universities she attended. She also has a Masters in restoring Art from Italy. She has exhibited in numerous countries, in the US and Europe.
She was one of the semi-finalist of the Bethesda Painting Award in Maryland in 2020. She has exhibited her work in collections and galleries all over the world as for example: at the Venice Biennale International Art Fair in 2019, she is in the Tonhua Art Ink Collection of 2016, at Shenzhen TongHua Education Management co. at LTD in Shenzhen, China. She has been recognized in many group exhibitions such as the Cesarina Horing Award: Patricia Segnan Award for Art or Art History”, the Juror's Choice Award at the Annapolis Maritime Museum (AMM) in Annapolis, MD in both 2016 and 2017. She was featured in the 2017 “PrintFest” at Towson University, in Best Printmakers of the 20th and 21st century; Full Court Press North American Juried Print Exhibition, an international juried competition at Texas University in Austin, TX. She was also recognized in 2017 with Excellence in Printmaking National Small Work and Excellence in Printmaking, both in Washington D.C. She was featured in Baltimore Sculptors at BCAG, Baltimore, MD.; Washington Printmaking Gallery: Excellence in Printmaking in Washington D.C.; along with “A Chelsea Alternative during Armory Week: The New York Art Week Show 2017” by Jennifer Wolf from Arte Fuse in 2017. She has been featured in many juried exhibitions at Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis in the last 4 years (2016 to 2020).
