Life is a passage, time moves on with or without us. Yet we are human and yearn for a sense of belonging and connection. These are the words that welcome us to the new exhibit YESTERYEAR, photographs by Alison Watt Jackson in the Museum of Art’s First Gallery, December 7 – 31, 2012. Among her black and white photographs are long unused ice skates dangling, a storefront frozen in time, and a Mexican gentleman resting between pool shots. Ms. Jackson manages to find diminutive visual moments in the world around her. The subjects are familiar, without being inconsequential, and prompt us to know the rest of the tale. The answers remain just out of reach so we are compelled to fabricate our own missive with Ms. Watt Jackson’s photographs our muse. 1010 Broad St. San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. Each artist was asked to begin an art piece but had to leave it unfinished. The first artist then handed the incomplete sculpture to his or her partner artist who completed the work in whatever medium he or she chose. Showcasing a variety of styles, techniques and media, the sculptures were surprising to all the participating artists. The result is a delightful blend of creativity that no one fully anticipated.

Norman E. Riley: Photo Surrealism
San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
OCTOBER 21, 2012
Photographs by Norman E. Riley. Mr. Riley has recently made a generous donation of his photographs to the Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection. Most of the photographs have the same background and are simple subjects comprised of few elements. Nearly all combine pieces of scrap metal with something living or objects that were once living. He has carefully selected and arranged the components in ways that are striking and harmonious creating surrealistic images that are incongruent juxtapositions. Mr. Riley shares, “It is my hope that these artful photographs will showcase a suitable command of the photographic medium from which they arise, namely photography, as distinguished from all forms of digital imaging.” October 12 – November 11, 2012. 1010 Broad St. San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Phone: 805.543.8562. Hours: 11am - 5pm. www.sloma.org
