About The Artist
John Shipp was born in 1947 in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Raised with many trips to the Smithsonian Institute Museums and the many art Galleries in the area, he was instilled with a sense of wonder at the variety of styles and techniques.
John started painting at the age of 10 years old when he won an oil paint set at a local art competition by drawing Abraham Lincoln. His first paintings were primarily gifts for family members, although a New York Skyline sold when he was 17. College years were spent studying architecture at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
After leaving the University, he moved to Los Angeles, CA where he took a 45 year detour to work in the architectural field with retail projects in the United States, Mexico and the Pacific Rim nations.
Now, after taking early retirement, John spends his time reading and painting, working primarily in acrylic on canvas. His style is eclectic, from the human figure to landscapes to abstract visualizations of everyday objects, places and ideas, experimenting with textures and colors.
